Born: 1548-1611
Education/Training:
choirboy in Ávila Cathedral;  where he is thought to have learned organ; earned a grant from King Philip II of Spain to travel to Rome to be study singing at the Jesuit Collegio Germanico, where he possibly studied with Palestrina

Best Known For:
being one of the most famous 16th century composers in Spain; one of the most important church composers of his day, along with Palestrina and de Lassus

Notable Compositions:
composed only sacred music, including Requiem Mass for Empress María, motets O vos omnes, Vere languores nostros, O magnum mysterium, Ave Maria, 16 settings of the Magnificat and 22 masses, in addition to many lamentations, responsories, and antiphons

Assignments:
hired by Collegio Germanico to teach music, and became maestro di cappella; ordained as a priest in 1575; chaplain at S Girolamo della Carita; returned to Spain as the personal chaplain to Dowager Empress María, sister to Philip II, at  Monasterio de las Descalzas de S Clara, where he became organist after her death
