Claudio Monteverdi
Born: 1567-1643
Education/Training: studied composition with Marc Antonio Ingegneri, the maestro di cappella of Cremona Cathedral, where he learned counterpoint, singing, and stringed instruments
Best Known For: being the most important composer in the late 16th early 17th century Italy; his work marked the transition from Renaissance to Baroque music, and wrote one of the earliest operas, L'Orfeo
Notable Compositions: published 9 books of madrigals; L'Orfeo, L'incorazione di Poppea; Lament of Arianna, Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria, Selva morale e spirituale
Assignments:
appointed suonatore di rivuola to Vincenzo I Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua, where he was a court musician and eventually became the maestro della musica; in 1613 was appointed maestro di cappella at San Marco in Venice
