Education/Training: began studying at Christ Church, High Harrogate under Ernest Farrar; studied privately at York Minster with organist and choirmaster Edward Bairstow; took a course in counterpoint with R.O. Morris
Notable Compositions: best known for song writing as well as Intimations of Immortaility, Clarinet Concerto, Dies natalis, Lo, the full, final sacrifice, For St. Cecilia
Assignments:
after meeting Holst, Arthur Bliss and Vaughan Williams, Vaughan Williams obtained a teaching post for him at the Royal Academy of Music; during World War II, worked for Ministry of War Transport and lodged German and Czech refugees in his home
Curious Facts:
settled with his wife in Aldbourne, Wiltshire, where he devoted himself to composing and apple growing, saving some rare English apples from extinction; founded The Newbury String Players, an amateur chamber orchestra which he conducted until his death
