attended Baylor University and Cornell University, studying with with Richard Willis, Robert Palmer, Karel Husa, and Burrill Phillips

Notable Compositions:
Second Concerto for Orchestra, August 4, 1964, Concerto for Orchestra

Assignments:
active as a conductor, writer, lecturer, and teacher; was composer in residence with the LA Philharmonic beginning in 1988 and currently is permanently positioned as composer in residence at Aspen Music Festival; taught at Cornell University from 1980-2014 and joined the faculty at the Juilliard School in 2014
