Education/Training: early piano lessons with William Hathon Green; entered newly founded Curtis Institute of Music at 14 where he studied piano, singing and composition; studied conducting and singing in Vienna with John Braun
Best Known For: his vocally inspired lyricism, encompassing both chromaticism and American simplicity
Notable Compositions: Adagio for Strings, Violin Concerto, Prayers of Kierkegaard, Vanessa; large output of art songs such as Sure on this Shining Night, Hermit Songs
Assignments:
3 works for the opening of Lincoln Center; Antony and Cleopatra for the new Metropolitan Opera House in 1966
