began piano lessons at age 14, and in 1881 left school to join the Moscow Conservatory where he studied with Arensky and Taneyev; later attended the St. Petersburg Conservatory where he studied with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov

Best Known For:
children's music and liturgical music

Notable Compositions:
4 liturgies of St. John Chrysostom, Samson, Tsar Fedor

Assignments:
worked as a piano teacher in St. Petersburg and Moscow, and wrote much children's music in connection with his work at the T. Berkman Music School and Gnesin Institute; received a pension for composition, but lost it after the Russian Revolution

Curious Facts:
after the Russion Revolution, left Russia and settled in Paris and then New York; became an American citizen in 1946
