founded the Robert Shaw Chorale in 1948, which toured the world sponsored by the U.S. State Department; Music Director of San Diego Symphony; director of the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus; Music Director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus from 1967 to 1988; collaborated with composer Alice Parker on arrangements of folksongs, hymns, spirituals, and Christmas music
