began taking music lessons at age five, and eventually attended the Munich Conservatory

Best Known For:
remembered almost exclusively for his extensive and challenging organ compositions

Notable Compositions:
wrote twelve masses, a Requiem, Stabat Mater, as well as several operas, symphonies, chamber music and choral works

Assignments:
became professor of piano and composition at the Munich Conservatory; in 1877 was appointed as a court conductor, which gave him responsibility for music in the Royal Chapel; appointed professor of organ and composition at the new Munich Conservatory

Curious Facts:
his fame came primarily from his teaching-he coutned among his pupils Englebert Humperdink and Horatio Parker
