Studied piano with Paul Berkowitz and composition with Robert Saxton at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama; Studied with studying with Alexander Goehr and Robin Holloway at King's College, Cambridge; Received an honorary doctorate from the Unversity of Essex in 2004

Britten Professor of Composition at the Royal Academy of Music; Music Director of the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group from 1998-2000; Composer in Residence at the Ojai Festival in 2000; Artistic Director of Aldeburgh Festival from 1999-2008

Curious Facts:
He is also an accomplished pianist, and was runner up in the BBC's Young Musician of the Year competition in 1990
