Milton Thomas, a former student of Pablo Casals, participated in the Prades Festival from 1950 to 1953, and since 1959 has been solo violist of Festival Casals in Puerto Rico. He has given solo appearances in London, New York, and on the West Coast, and has recorded with Casals, Hess, and Stern for Columbia Records. 'He also played the premiere performance of Concerto for Viola and Orchestra by Henri Lazarof in Jerusalem in 1962 and in Turin and Paris in 1964. The Brandenburg Players, a chamber group formed by Milton Thomas in 1960, has been described by the New York Times as "bracing and beautiful." As a soloist, Thomas has been acclaimed by noted critics the world over: "In every guise (he) proved an artist to his fingertips," London Times; "His musicianship is of the comprehensive kind that recognizes no barriers of style," Los Angeles Times; "Mr. Thomas stands alongside our top ranking violists," New York Herald Tribune. Last August, Thomas appeared as soloist in the Mozart Festival given at Lincoln Center in New York, and last week he performed as violist-conductor of the Brandenburg Players in a concert with pianist Georgia Akst at Carnegie Hall.
